Girls@COP26 - The Solutions are feminist

Institution:

Glasgow City Council and Glasgow Caledonian University

Challenge:

Young girls and women are disproportionately impacted by the climate crisis. Yet they often remain excluded from international dialogues and conferences where environmental issues are discussed and decisions on their futures are being made. Since women and girls are at the frontline of the climate crisis, it is vitally important that women and girls’ voices and needs are heard.

Solution:

With “Girls@COP26 - The Solutions are feminist” the Glasgow City Council managed to get together more than 2500 S3 secondary female pupils from schools across the city. They gathered at a special conference at Glasgow Caledonian University for the duration of the 2021 COP26 conference to debate different aspects of the climate emergency and its connection to feminism and the SDG 5 (gender equality). The goal of these events was not only to raise awareness for the climate crisis, but also to give young girls and women in particular a space to voice their opinion and come up with their own solutions to climate issues.

Impact:

Due to “Girls@COP26 - The Solutions are feminist” the Glasgow City Council enabled young girls and women to learn more about the intricate relationship between climate change and gender equality as well as to actively contribute to finding solutions.
