Challenge:

Women in the labour market face challenges in entrepreneurship and starting businesses, including limited access to capital, gender biases, and a lack of mentorship opportunities.Structural barriers and stereotypes often hinder their ability to secure funding, gain equal business opportunities, and navigate a traditionally male-dominated entrepreneurial landscape, contributing to gender disparities in business ownership and success.

Solution:

Barcelona Activa promotes women’s inclusion in the business world through its Escola de Dones Emprenedores (Women Entrepreneurs School) and their more recent project “Lidera”, which offers an expanded range of programmes and activities to help all women who want to grow professionally. The project boosts the professional trajectory of women in Barcelona through support for start-ups, personal mentoring, management development programmes, skills improvement, digital strategy and financial support. Lidera’s impact is strengthened by collaborating with a network of over 100 women’s organisations, while their information campaign around the city is seen as integral to transforming attitudes, business culture and breaking the glass ceiling.

Impact:

So far (2024) Lidera has provided training for four thousand women. By providing crucial mentoring and resources to overcome the specific challenges women face in the labour market, the project fosters their success and economic empowerment. Such initiatives contribute to a more diverse and thriving business ecosystem, unlocking the full potential of women's innovation and leadership in the labour market.
