London: Delivering gender eqality through procurement

As the largest buyer of fire kit in the UK, the London Fire Brigade plays a key role in shaping the way procurement can deliver gender equality within the fire service.

LFB aims to:

• work together to deliver high quality services and create a safe and positive environment for everyone.
• ensure that equality and diversity runs through all activities

There are 268 women firefighters in London and the Brigade’s procurement team are supporting the workforce and making it better for women to join by testing and evaluating the fire protective equipment so that they better fit all of its workforce. Helping to design and test the world’s first bespoke smaller gas tight suit.

The Brigade has also made its procurement processes more open and accessible to attract diverse businesses to work with the world class fire and rescue service.
